Why I Am Proud To Tell Liberian Stories In A World Obsessed With New York

Liberian stories deserve a massive spotlight. Especially in a world often fixated on New York’s glittering skyscrapers, these Liberian stories offer a crucial counter-narrative. Yellow taxis honk, overpriced lattes in chic cafes, this iconic scene fills countless books, movies, and social media feeds. While undeniably captivating, this imagery often overshadows a multitude of other rich experiences. It casts a long shadow over the vibrant, compelling, and often untold narratives emerging from places like Liberia, which boasts a rich history.

Do not get me wrong, New York is magnificent. The city throbs with undeniable energy and endless possibilities. I genuinely love its dizzying pace and unparalleled cultural mosaic. I eagerly anticipate my next visit to stroll through Central Park or catch a Broadway show. But my heart truly yearns to illuminate a different narrative. One rooted in the vibrant tapestry of Western Africa, Liberia. What about a story set amidst the lively chaos of a bustling Monrovia market?

The air hums with excited chatter from vendors. You hear the rhythmic pounding of pestle on mortar, preparing pounded cassava called dumboy. The intoxicating aroma of pepper soup with freshly caught sea fish fills the air. Imagine the kaleidoscope of colorful lappa fabrics that resilient Liberian women wear, their laughter echoing through the stalls of the market. Or picture a tale woven into the breathtaking landscapes of rural Liberia, where sunsets do not just fade. They explode across the sky with streaks of molten gold, fiery crimson, and deep violet.

Along the Atlantic coast, monstrous sea waves are not just big; they invite surfers to ride perfect barrels. A surfer’s paradise, they call Grand Cape Mount County. This crucial part of Liberia reminds me every time of a future Miami. These are the authentic, deeply human, and captivating settings for truly compelling Liberian stories.

For me, Liberia is not merely a geographical backdrop. It is home. The internet often remembers it as war-torn and Ebola-affected. But it is the very ground where I learned that a simple bowl of dried rice, especially a hearty, rich man dried rice simmering with seasoned boiled and grounded pepper, and garden eggs, mixed rice, sesame seeds, luncheon meat or sausage or both, and perfectly seasoned fried fish is not just sustenance. It is a meal that can truly heal one’s hunger and take you to a place of satisfaction that would make you thank your maker. We do not call it rich man dried rice for nothing. One must be willing to splurge and not dwell in lack, especially not count your calories, to be able to make this name relevant, or else, it is just plain old dried rice. Dried rice is a quick but highly nutritious and satisfying dish passed down through generations. Trust me, you will choose it over jollof rice any day. I am working on the recipe for you. Sign up for the newsletter to be able to get it when I do.

I remember my childhood clearly, where my beloved grandmother, God rest her soul, would get up early every Saturday morning and rush to the beach side so she could buy the best fresh fish from the fishermen. Grandma would always come back home with tons of fish for us to eat, and rich man dried rice. I remember always having so much fish that I would have to put my fish in a separate bowl because the fish would cover the rice. Oh, how I wish I could live in a coastal area with lots of good fish. In my home, growing up, Saturdays were for rich man dried rice or for fufu or pounded cassava (dumboy) and pepper soup. The fish, shrimps, and seafood for pepper soup were always in surplus.

Liberia is where I first heard my aunties exchange uproarious gossip in our uniquely melodic colloquial English. Their laughter would echo through the roof or under the relentless tropical sun. Every single corner of this remarkable nation, from the bustling city streets of Sinkor where I was born and raised to the tranquil villages nestled by verdant tropical rainforests, brims with an abundance of Liberian stories waiting for someone to tell them. They patiently wait for their moment in the global spotlight.

This deep connection to my homeland strongly influences my creative work. The themes I explore in my books emphasize resilience, self-discovery, and cultural pride. My books also draw on this spirit of resourcefulness and community, reflecting the ingenuity of the Liberian people.

Why, then, should I ever consider setting aside these intense personal narratives? My characters, you see, are raw, relatable, and flawed just like the country itself. They possess a sense of self. They navigate life’s challenges with unwavering resilience. They possess boundless humor that disarms even the toughest situations. And a resourcefulness born from a country that has courageously rebuilt itself time and time again. These are not just fictional creations; they are living, breathing embodiments of authentic Liberian stories. Their struggles and triumphs resonate deeply.

Why I Am Proud To Tell Liberian Stories In A World Obsessed With New York

As a lifestyle author, the allure of catering to what global audiences expect can be incredibly tempting. There is commercial appeal in following established trends, in writing what is perceived as “marketable”. However, there is something electrifying, something deeply sacred, about committing oneself to telling Liberian stories. It is akin to stepping onto a grand stage with a powerful megaphone. You confidently declare: “Hey, everyone, there’s so much more to life than just Broadway shows and bagels! There’s the vibrant pulse of West Africa, too!” This powerful, unapologetic spirit is beautifully reflected in my novels. The rich tapestry of Liberian stories takes center stage, inviting readers into a world they might never have imagined.

Let’s rewind to 1847. While much of Africa was still firmly under colonial rule, Liberia declared its independence. Think about that for a second. We were not handed freedom; we claimed it. This bold act made us the oldest independent republic in Africa. Ethiopia is the oldest African Republic, and Liberia is the oldest independent Republic. Imagine the audacity, the vision, the sheer courage of a people, some already on the land and others who were freed slaves from the Americas and the Caribbean, planting a flag of self-determination on West African soil. This was not just a political statement; it was a strong declaration of dignity and autonomy.

Indeed, Liberia was founded as a chosen place, a destination for those yearning to escape the shackles of slavery and systemic oppression, and those who were fortunate enough to escape slavery altogether. Liberia was a haven, a new beginning for freed slaves who wanted to return to Africa. While Sierra Leone also played a crucial role in resettling formerly enslaved people when they landed on Sherbro Island in Sierra Leone and Providence Island in Liberia, Liberia’s unique journey saw it evolve into a full-fledged republic, modeled on American political structures. Even our flag and pledge can testify to this. I believe my people could have done better.

This fascinating blend of African traditions and American constitutional ideals forged a unique cultural identity. This complex beginning, this “return to the source” for so many, adds incredible layers to Liberian stories, offering narratives of displacement, resilience, and the relentless pursuit of freedom. These are not simple narratives; they are rich tapestries of hope, hardship, and the sheer audacity of carving out a new destiny.

Our history is not just about our independence; it is about inspiring others. Liberia was not just a spectator as other African nations fought for liberation. We actively participated in the Pan-African movement. Our leaders consistently used international platforms to champion the cause of decolonization across the continent. We were among the founding members of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), now the African Union (AU). Our diplomatic efforts, our strong stance against apartheid and support, and our unwavering support for newly independent states set a powerful precedent. Many African countries looked to Liberia as an example, a symbol of what was possible. This spirit of solidarity, of “lifting as we climb,” is another vital, often overlooked, thread in the fabric of Liberian stories. These are narratives of leadership, of shared purpose, and of a commitment to a liberated Africa.

And what about progress? It is rarely mentioned, but Liberia once boasted some of the best hospitals and hotels in Africa. The Hotel Africa and the John F Kennedy Hospital, which still heals today. For decades, particularly through the mid-20th century, we were a destination for medical care across the sub-region. People traveled from neighboring countries to seek treatment in our well-equipped facilities, staffed by highly trained professionals. Our public health initiatives were groundbreaking, tackling tropical diseases with remarkable success. This era highlights a period of significant development and scientific advancement within Liberia. It paints a picture far removed from the singular narrative of war. Imagine the Liberian stories from that time: stories of innovative doctors, of patients recovering against odds, of families finding hope in advanced medical care. These are narratives of our mistakes, lessons, and what we can achieve even after all that we have been through.

Our pioneering spirit did not stop in the past. In 2006, Liberia shattered another glass ceiling. We proudly elected Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, the first African female president. This monumental achievement sent shockwaves of inspiration across the continent and the world. It demonstrated our nation’s resilience and commitment to progress, even after years of conflict. She brought stability and hope, paving the way for a new generation I was proud to be part of.

And just when you thought Liberian stories could not get any more amazing, a few years later in 2018, the world watched as Liberia swore in George Manneh Weah as president. Yes, that George Weah! The very same football legend who captivated the world with his mesmerizing gift. He is the only African player in history to date to win the Ballon d’Or, the prestigious award for the world’s best footballer, which he got in 1995. That same year, he was also named FIFA World Player of the Year and African Player of the Year (an award he won three times: 1989, 1994, 1995). He was the World Best Player, European Best Player, African Best Player, and Head of State. Talk about spelling his name, WEAH. God is indeed an artist.

From the pitch to the presidency, his journey is a testament to the extraordinary paths and immense talent that emerge from Liberia. His story, and countless others like it, defy every narrow stereotype. These modern chapters add thrilling dimensions to Liberian stories, showcasing our ability to produce leaders and champions across diverse fields.

So, when a Western publisher expects only war and poverty, they miss the Liberian stories of a pioneering republic, a haven for freed slaves, a champion of Pan-African liberation, a former leader in regional healthcare, and a nation that broke political and sporting barriers. They miss what is to come for my beloved country because by God, Liberia will be a country the world will celebrate again.

Western publishers miss:

  • Robertsport, Grand Cape Mount County: a world-renowned surfer’s paradise with consistent waves and pristine golden beaches, perfect for both beginners and experienced surfers.
  • Kpatawee Waterfall, Bong County: a stunning cascade of water forming refreshing natural pools, nestled within a tranquil and vast rainforest.
  • Mount Nimba Strict Nature Reserve: It is a majestic mountain range that shows breathtaking panoramic views and magnificent biodiversity that includes unique flora and fauna.
  • Sapo National Park, Sinoe County: This is Liberia’s largest protected area and a vital West African rainforest gem. This place houses elusive pygmy hippos, forest elephants, and diverse primate species.
  • Gola Rainforest National Park: This is one of the largest remaining blocks of pristine Upper Guinean Forest. Gola Rainforest National Park is rich in biodiversity, and it is a critical habitat for numerous threatened species in Western Africa.
  • Marshall Margibi County: Let me also tell you about a place I have stood and truly understood God’s creativity and genius. Marshall features perfect beaches and unique estuaries where rivers meet the Atlantic Ocean. Here you can have a lake, the river, and the ocean, where you can decide which one to bask in. Marshall is ideal for serene escapes and exploring waterways.
  • Untouched Coastal Stretches: Beyond specific towns, Liberia boasts countless miles of wild, often deserted, and incredibly beautiful coastline, offering unparalleled solitude and natural splendor.

We should not forget that Liberia also has high-value Natural Resources like:

  • Iron Ore: For years, Liberia has been the largest exporter of iron ore. My country possesses extensive deposits of high-grade iron ore. Historically, iron ore mining has been a major contributor to the economy, and significant reserves remain largely untapped or are being revitalized. Recent surveys have also identified over a dozen critical minerals alongside iron ore, including lithium, cobalt, copper, and nickel.
  • Timber/Forest Resources: Liberia is part of the Upper Guinean Forest belt and has the highest forest cover (68% of land area) in West Africa. This provides a diverse array of tropical timber species. Liberia’s forests contain a vast array of valuable tropical timber species, many of which are known for their durability, beauty, and suitability for various uses like construction, flooring, furniture, and specialized applications. The Forestry Development Authority (FDA) of Liberia has identified numerous commercially important species.
  • Diamonds: Diamonds are found primarily in alluvial deposits, particularly in the Mano River and Lofa regions. I remember as a child hearing my grand uncles tell stories of people walking by roads or in front of their homes and finding diamonds after heavy rains in Lofa. Liberia is a recognized producer of diamonds, with ongoing efforts to ensure ethical and regulated trade, which has hindered our status as a high exporter internationally.
  • Gold: Gold mining has a long history in Liberia, with both artisanal and commercial operations. Significant gold reserves exist in various parts of the country, attracting increasing investment. Gold is so common that the population of middle-class people, especially women who have gold jewellery, in Liberia is high.
  • Rubber: Liberia is a major producer of natural rubber, with large plantations, including the world’s largest contiguous rubber farm operated by Firestone. Rubber remains a primary agricultural export in the country.
  • Hydropower: Liberia has significant hydroelectric power potential, with several major rivers like the Cavalla, Cestos, Lofa, Mano, Saint John, and Saint Paul rivers offering opportunities for damming and electricity generation. The Mount Coffee Hydropower Plant is a key example of this potential.

When Western publishers say our stories will not sell to their audience, they miss the complex interplay of heritage and hope. They miss the stories of incredible ingenuity born from resilience. They miss the humor, the vibrant culture, and the unwavering spirit that defines our people. What rich story from Liberia cannot sell to Western audiences? This is not only out of racism but mere ignorance because why do you think Liberia is full of caucasians if our stories do not resonate?

The authentic Liberian stories I strive to tell in my novels are deeply rooted in this rich, multifaceted history and culture. They explore how this legacy shapes contemporary lives. They highlight the enduring strength of communities that have built and rebuilt themselves. They reflect the quiet triumphs and joy found in everyday life, even amidst challenges. My novels draw on a spirit that nourishes both body and soul, much like our history nourishes our identity.

We are not a monolithic narrative. We are a symphony of voices, a kaleidoscope of experiences. We are the inheritors of a unique independence, a spirit of solidarity, and a history of remarkable achievement and resilience. These layers give Liberian stories their profound depth and universal resonance. My commitment is to share these narratives, urging the world to look beyond simplistic stereotypes and embrace the full, magnificent scope of who we are. It is time for the world to truly see and celebrate the untold richness of Liberian stories. There are millions of stories we want to tell you, if only you would listen.

Are you ready to dive headfirst into the vibrant richness of Liberian narratives? I invite you to start with Who is Ma Kemah?  This is not just another Romantic Women’s Fiction Novel. It is an immersive experience that promises to broaden your horizons.

Liberia is so much more than these limited archetypes. Our Liberian stories are multifaceted. They brim with unbridled joy found in communal gatherings like impromptu street parties, the street coming to a woman’s aid when she is in trouble, or neighbors confronting a man who thinks his wife is his punching bag. They showcase fierce ambition that fuels innovation. They reveal tender love that binds families together. And they carry infectious laughter that echoes through generations. They encompass the full spectrum of human emotion. True well-being encompasses both physical vitality and emotional nourishment from strong community bonds.

Liberian stories are vibrant. They are raw. They are unequivocally real. They feature strong, determined women like Ma Kemah. She navigates love and life with an indomitable spirit that we all carry. There are sisters like Mildred and Susan, whose personal struggles reflect the strength of Liberian womanhood. These deeply human characters serve as powerful ambassadors. They showcase the boundless richness of our culture. They boldly challenge the global audience to expand their horizons.

Why I Am Proud To Tell Liberian Stories In A World Obsessed With New York

Writing for a global audience, while remaining true to my cultural roots, is an intricate art. It feels much like balancing a massive pan of rich man dried rice on your head while dancing to afrobeat music. It is undeniably tricky. Yet, when executed with precision and passion, the result is glorious. Sometimes, I need to meticulously explain concepts Western readers might not grasp. “Rich dried rice,” for example, is not just rice. It is a comforting, soulful experience.

Other times, I intentionally lean fully into the immersive beauty of Liberian culture. I trust readers to use their curiosity and Google what they do not know, the same way I had to Google snow before I saw it. Perhaps they will discover the rich history of the True Whig Party. It is my subtle way of saying, “Come on, step into our world. Learn about Liberia. We are worth the effort of discovery. Immerse yourself in these incredible Liberian stories”.

To make these narratives accessible and engaging, I use a blend of familiar narrative techniques with unique Liberian insights. I aim for clear and fluid prose.

For aspiring writers looking to refine content, I often recommend tools like QuillBot. It is an invaluable writing assistant. Additionally, when brainstorming, I find GetGenie AI a powerful companion. And Scrivener for organization, editing, outlining, and research. Liberian stories do not merely deserve a place in the global spotlight. They demand it. They are a testament to the indomitable human spirit. They showcase remarkable resilience, boundless creativity, and the enduring power of community. They illuminate for the world that we are far more than just survivors. We are vibrant dreamers, passionate lovers, and masterful storytellers.

I am extremely proud to tell Liberian stories because they embody authenticity. They are messy, beautiful, and undeniably unforgettable—just like Liberia itself. From bustling Red Light Market to serene Robertsport beaches, Liberia pulsates with life.

To all the incredible readers who have graciously joined me on this meaningful and extensive journey, I extend my deepest gratitude. Your engagement fuels my passion. To my fellow Liberians, I urge you to keep telling your stories. The world is eager for new perspectives even when it does not know it yet. Your voice matters. And to New York? Stay fabulous.
