Mistake #2: Thinking Amazon Would Make Me Money Only Because I Published My Books Online (The Platform Dependency Trap)
My second colossal mistake, intricately linked to the first, was putting all my precious romance eggs in the Amazon basket. While Amazon is an incredible powerful platform where many authors do make significant income, and a non-negotiable part of almost any indie author’s strategy, it is most certainly not your sole savior or a guarantee of success just by publishing, far from it.
What I desperately needed, and what I now advocate for every indie author, is to have their own website, build their email list and brand, blog about their books and topics relating to their works, and then, crucially, sell their books online directly to readers. This way, they can be in charge of their sales, their precious reviews, and virtually everything else.
The Perils of Single-Platform Reliance:
- Algorithm Whims: Amazon’s algorithms are a black box. They change without notice, and a strategy that worked yesterday might tank today. Your livelihood shouldn’t hinge on a volatile algorithm.
- Limited Data: When you sell exclusively through Amazon, you get very little direct information about your readers. You don’t have their email addresses (the most valuable asset!), you don’t know where they came from before buying, and you have limited insight into their purchasing habits beyond your books.
- Royalty Splits: While KDP offers decent royalties, selling direct often allows you to keep a significantly higher percentage of your earnings, which is especially important in high-volume, lower-price novels.

This is, without a doubt, the single most valuable asset any author can build. Romance readers are incredibly loyal. They often follow authors, not just individual books. My biggest errors here were:

I once called myself a romance novelist, then a women’s fiction novelist. Honestly, I appealed to no one strongly enough to build a loyal following.
Romance readers are fantastic! They often read within specific niches and consume everything related to that niche. They love their tropes (enemies-to-lovers for the love of me, I will never understand the obsession with this, forced proximity, grumpy/sunshine, billionaires, shifters, cowboys, small towns, etc.). They expect certain elements and a specific kind of emotional journey. My mistake was not immersing myself deeply enough in one or two subgenres, learning their specific conventions, and then writing consistently within them.
The Niche Advantage in Romance:
- Targeted Marketing: If you know you write small-town contemporary romance, you know exactly who to target with your ads and where to find your readers online (Facebook groups, blogs, Goodreads lists for that subgenre).
- Reader Expectation: When a reader picks up a book with a certain cover and blurb that signals “dark romance,” they expect a dark romance. Delivering on those expectations builds trust and loyalty.
- Series Potential: Most romance readers are bingers. If they love one book in a series or by an author writing in their preferred niche, they will buy the next. Consistent niche writing makes series building much easier.
My Learning Curve: I eventually realized that instead of trying to write for everyone, I needed to focus on my readers. I started analyzing popular books in subgenres I enjoyed reading, studying their covers, blurbs, and reader reviews to understand what truly resonated. I have picked a lane, a few lanes that were complementary, and now I am stuck with them. This allowed me to attract the right readers, build a coherent brand, and finally see some traction. Don’t be a generalist in a world of specialists. Niche down to stand out.

This final set of mistakes ties everything together and explains why talented authors eventually fade away. I thought writing a book was like climbing Everest; once you reached the summit, you were done. I would launch a book, hope for the best, and then feel utterly depleted. This led to long gaps between releases and a general disengagement with anyone who wasn’t actively buying my book.
- Inconsistent Releases (Especially Fatal in Romance):
Romance readers are famously voracious. They often read multiple books a week. If they love your book, they want the next one now. Long gaps (6-12 months or more) mean you lose momentum, and readers move on to other authors. My mistake was getting overwhelmed by the marketing and taking years off before starting the next. My last book, which was a bestseller, was almost five years ago. I took that long break to be a wife and started and grew a fashion business with my husband, and I have had two lovely boys since. Being single and spending all your salary on book-related expenses without seeing a return on your investment is easy until you aren’t single anymore.
The Fix: Develop a consistent release schedule, even if it’s “only” 2-3 books a year. Plan your series. Readers expect the next installment promptly. This builds anticipation and keeps you top of mind.
My Mistake: Thinking a book’s life cycle was short, rather than building a steady backlist.
- Not Building a Reader Community (Beyond a Sales Transaction):
Romance readers are incredibly passionate and often form strong online communities (Facebook groups, BookTok, Goodreads groups). I used to treat readers as just buyers. I didn’t engage with them outside of direct sales. I didn’t participate in reader groups, ask for feedback, or make them feel like part of my author journey. This was a huge disservice to myself and my potential readership.
The Fix: Engage! Be present where your readers are. Start an author Facebook group, interact on social media, ask questions, run polls, and offer glimpses behind the scenes. Make your readers feel valued and connected. They become your biggest cheerleaders. This is something I am working on currently. The demand for diverse voices and accessible formats is growing.
