DIY hair spray facilitates growing long, healthy hair, proving that moisture is just as important as the products you use. Think of your hair like a plant. If it’s constantly dry, it becomes brittle, breaks easily, and struggles to grow. But when you keep it hydrated, it retains length, looks healthier, and feels softer.

Daily moisturizing can be as simple as using a light hair spray. Unlike heavy creams or oils, a water-based spray penetrates the strands and scalp quickly, giving your hair the hydration it craves without weighing it down.

To make your homemade hair spray, you only need a few simple ingredients, most of which are inexpensive and easy to find. Below, I will add Amazon links for all the products you will need to make this.

If you have any at home, you won’t need to get them, but if you don’t, kindly click the link below to get them and help this mama make some coins at no extra cost to you.

Now, grab your water bottle or glass, pour yourself some fruit water (Yes, we stay hydrated here), take your notebook, and your emotional support lip gloss or balm, whatever works for you, and hit that share button floating right in front of your eyes.

Why Homemade Rosemary Hair Spray Works?

One of the best natural ingredients for a homemade hair spray is rosemary leaves. Rosemary has been used for centuries to strengthen hair, improve circulation in the scalp, and encourage new growth.

By boiling the leaves, you extract their nutrients into the water, creating a simple but powerful base for your spray.

  • Improves scalp blood flow that takes nutrients to your hair roots.
  • Strengthens strands, reducing breakage and split ends.
  • Encourages new growth, helping dormant follicles re-activate.
  • Keeps hair soft and hydrated when you use it daily.

Homemade Rosemary Hair Spray Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of fresh rosemary leaves (rinsed well)
  • 4 cups of distilled water
  • 1 teaspoon of aloe vera juice (optional for extra moisture)
  • Preservative (e.g., Optiphen, Geogard ECT, or another natural preservative suitable for water-based products. Follow usage rate on label)

Instructions on how to make DIY hair spray:

  1. Add the rosemary leaves and distilled water to a pot.
  2. Bring to a gentle boil, then reduce the heat and simmer it for 10–15 minutes.
  3. Remove from the heat, cover it, and let it steep until the water cools completely.
  4. Strain out the leaves and pour the rosemary-infused water into a clean mixing bowl.
  5. Add the aloe vera juice if you desire.
  6. Mix in your preservative according to the manufacturer’s instructions (usually around 0.5%–1% of total liquid).
  7. Pour it into a spray bottle.
  8. Spray your hair every morning before a shower

Storage & Use

  • Store it at room temperature if a preservative is added. Without a preservative, keep it in the fridge and use it within 1 week.
  • Spray directly onto your scalp and hair once or twice daily.
  • Massage it gently for 1–2 minutes to help the nutrients absorb.

Consistency is key. Spritzing this homemade rosemary hair spray daily will give your hair the moisture it needs to thrive, making it softer, stronger, and less prone to breakage, which is the perfect foundation for length retention.
