Let’s be real. If you’re here searching for how to shower properly as a lady, it means one of two things: either nobody ever taught you how to take a bath properly as a lady, or you’ve been doing it wrong, and your perfume is working overtime trying to cover up your body odor from many different places.
This step-by-step shower routine for ladies will show you how to remove body odor, dead skin, and stay fresh all day.
And sis, there is a difference between standing in the shower and rinsing your body with your hands, and actually being clean.
Showering is not just standing under water and rubbing soap on your body with your hands. Bathing as a woman should be different from men.
You need a proper female hygiene routine that is intentional and thorough every day, twice a day.
Before we get into the steps of proper female bathing, let me set the record straight: historically, African and Middle Eastern civilizations were and still are bathing pioneers.
Hammams, scented oils, and structured cleansing routines existed long before Europe even understood the concept of daily hygiene.
Remember, Europeans only bathed once or twice a year. Oh, I am not making this up. That’s history.
As a proud African, I take such pride in saying that we were the ones who taught your forefathers to bathe.
So when it comes to showering, we have the authority because this has been passed down to us for generations, and now you’re about to get the tea.

ToggleWhy Knowing How to Shower Properly as a Lady Matters
First things first: sweat itself doesn’t smell. Odor comes from bacteria breaking down sweat. Dead skin buildup leads to dullness and hidden smells.
Moisture trapped in your skin folds? That’s where the sneaky odors hide.
A proper shower removes all of that. This post is your complete body cleansing routine. It’s not a splash-and-go moment. This is about twice a day, a shower routine that lasts all day.
Yes, I said it. You should shower twice a day, no matter the season of the year. Why? Because you sweat, sit, and go outdoors. The second shower isn’t optional. It’s part of cleanliness.
How To Take A Shower Properly As A Lady: Step-by-Step
Your step-by-step shower routine for ladies starts with washing your body from top to bottom, including ears, nose, underarms, and intimate areas.
This is your fast but thorough morning shower routine. Think: I have places to be, but I will not leave my house smelling like yesterday’s sweat and leftover secretion running down my undies.
First, you need a washcloth, an African exfoliating net if you like it. You will need a washcloth alongside the exfoliating net so that you can be able to properly reach behind your ears, inside your nose, and between your legs. Then you need soap to wash your body
Some people prefer to have a separate cloth for their face that they can use with their face cleaner. Others might start with their face first, then move downwards.
Clean your neck and behind your ears. Lift your ears and clean behind them. Yes, behind the folds, too, sweat and dead skin love to hide and stick behind your ears
Wash thoroughly under your arms. This part isn’t non-negotiable. If you don’t clean your arm properly, you will smell. Lift your arms fully and rinse thoroughly.
Underarms are bacterial zones, so treat them like the VIP section of your hygiene routine.
I know many of us forget or don’t know that we need to wash under our breasts. Girl, you have to lift and wash under your breasts, whether they are big or not.
More if you are in the big breast gang like me. Moisture and sweat love to stay under our breasts.
Another place you must wash daily is your navel. Use your washcloth and get the tip inside it, and clean it very well.
Dirt loves to sit there and blacken. This can cause serious breakouts and pimples on your face. Do not skip your navel every day you shower.
Don’t forget you need to reach your back and wash it properly. I know sometimes our hands don’t reach there, but make sure your back is clean, or it can accumulate dead skin.
Take your soap-free towel and gently cleanse inside your nostrils. You need to do this to remove buildup or sometimes bacteria hiding there that can make us sick.
Washing your nostrils is also a health hack because it removes any bacteria that you breathed in during the day or night that might be waiting to enter your system
One place that many women neglect or don’t wash properly is between their legs. And I am not only talking about washing between your legs with water.
I am talking about squatting, reaching into your vagina with your index finger with your right hand and a shower head in the other hand, and rinsing out your last night or all day body fluid from your vagina until everything comes out.
If you want to learn more about this, read these posts here to get more information on what I call the squat and clean method. Wash between the buttocks. Don’t forget this part, too.
Just so you know, some African countries, and Liberia specifically, have been practicing this for generations. This is the one shower routine that we have never skipped.
We have been doing it since ancient days and still do with no side effects, so forget what you think you know or the lies or incomplete information that you have learned over the years.
And if you are thinking lots of doctors can’t be wrong, remember that at one time, scientists thought the Earth was flat. Also, remember Africans were the ones who taught Europeans that showering daily was the right thing.
They thought they were okay showering once a year, too. I am sure now that wasn’t the best thing, even though they had done it all their lives.
Also, I can’t write this post without mentioning that you must wash your feet in the shower. Your feet are part of your body, and they must be washed daily.
Wash the tops, between toes, and heels. Don’t ignore them. Foot odor sneaks up on people like a ninja.
How to Smell Good Everywhere After Your Shower
The night shower is your reset moment. You’ve been out, you’ve sweated, and the day has layered lots of bacteria, viruses, and more nasty things on your skin.
This is your deep cleanse opportunity to get rid of all of that.
Showering is just step one. Step two is layering intentionally.
Dry Completely: Leaving moisture between your thighs, under breasts, underarms, and buttocks will breed unnecessary odor. Make sure to pat those areas dry.
Apply Your Body Oil on Slightly Damp Skin: This Step will lock in moisture on your skin and prevent your skin from going ashy.

Use Your Deodorant: Again, make sure your underarms are fully dry before you apply your deodorant to them.
Deodorants shouldn’t be applied to wet skin. If you want to learn how to make homemade deodorants that work, smell amazing, and have only natural ingredients, read Easy Natural Deodorant That Actually Works.
Apply a Light Body Spray or Diluted fragrance body Oil: Layer your body mist on your skin lightly for the scent to reach its depth.
If you are like me, who likes a diluted fragrance body oil you can rub directly onto your skin, then this is the time to add that oil to your skin.

Apply a Light Hair Perfume to Your Hair: Applying hair perfumes when you shower gives you an extra feminine boost and fragrance layering. Our hair carries all the odors we encounter daily.
Therefore, keeping the hair clean and lightly perfuming it is a great way to add a feminine edge to our day.

Before you leave your house, don’t forget to add your full Perfume. Remember to avoid your neck. Girl, you don’t need thyroid issues.
Spray your perfume in the air and walk in it. Don’t apply it directly to your skin or clothes. This is how you stay fresh without drowning in the fragrance.
Shower Routine for Glowing Skin
Having a glowing skin is not merely genetic. It happens when you constantly use the right products. And I don’t mean buying expensive products and running through your budget.
Exfoliation and moisturizing are key to your shower routine for glowing skin. Don’t skip this if you want your skin to glow.
First, your glow starts in the shower, not in the makeup bag. That is why your shower routine is very important in helping your skin get the glow it needs.
That is why adding body scrubs for exfoliation to your weekly shower routine helps your skin achieve that smooth and silky skin texture we want crave for.
When you exfoliate your skin twice a week, you take out dead skin from your body and leave your skin barrier clean and clear for your daily moisturizer or body oil to work its magic on your skin.
Common Hygiene Mistakes Women Make When They Wash Their Bodies
There are common hygiene mistakes that seem harmless until they start to affect how you smell, how your skin feels, and even how confident you move around in public.
Here are some of the most common hygiene mistakes women make when washing their bodies, and why they matter very much.
1. Washing With Hands Only
Using your hands alone is better than nothing, but it’s often not enough to get your skin clean.
Your hands glide over your skin. They don’t exfoliate. They don’t remove built-up sweat, dead skin, deodorant residue, or body oils properly.
Over time, that buildup creates dull skin, clogged pores, and sometimes odor that seems to “come back fast.”
A clean washcloth, exfoliating glove, or African net helps clear dirt instead of you just moving soap around your body.
If you ever feel like you showered but don’t feel fully clean? This is usually why.
2. Skipping the Feet
Some women assume that because soap runs down their legs, their feet are automatically clean.
Girl, noooo!
Your feet sweat a lot. Those toes constantly trap moisture. The space between your toes is warm and dark, which is the perfect environment for odor and even fungi to thrive.
You should scrub your soles to keep them smooth and clean, between your toes, and around the nail beds. You don’t want to leave bacteria behind. And if your shoes ever smell? This is your main culprit.
3. Not Drying Properly
Showering is only half the job. Knowing where to dry properly is the other. You should never leave water under your breasts, between your thighs, under your arms, between your toes, between your legs, your vagina, and buttcrack.
If you do, you will invite bacteria and odor. You don’t want to be that woman who wears nice clothes and perfumes but still has that annoying odor underneath.
Dry those areas very well every single time. Pay attention to folds and creases. They can be sneaky.
4. Spraying Perfume on Sweat
I know for some people they think this is common knowledge, but if we are being honest, this isn’t. I need to hold your hand when I say this. Perfume is not a replacement for bathing.
When fragrance mixes with sweat, it doesn’t mask the odor; instead, it blends with it. The result you get is a sharp, sour scent that’s worse than either one alone.
If you notice yourself reaching for perfume instead of washing properly, pause and think about how you are doing what your ancestors did.
They refused to shower and attempted to mask their odors with lots of fragrance, which never works. Fragrance should sit on clean skin, not compete with bacteria.
5. Rewearing Bras Too Often
Ladies, we need to discuss this. Your bras sit directly against your sweat glands, underboobs areas, and folds
They absorb sweat, oils, and dead skin daily.
Wearing the same bra multiple days in a row without washing it allows bacteria to build up, which can lead to odor, irritation, and even breakouts along the chest and back area
If you wouldn’t rewear underwear without washing it, rethink the bra.
6. Not Changing Washcloths
A damp washcloth left in the shower where there isn’t sun or air to dry it becomes a breeding ground for bacteria.
If you keep using the same cloth for days without washing and drying it properly, you’re essentially rubbing old bacteria back onto clean skin.
Ideally, you should rinse your washcloth thoroughly in the shower after every use. Hang it in a dry, well-ventilated space, and replace it every 2–3 days.
7. Ignoring Hidden Folds
Our bodies have creases, no matter the body size, but especially if you are on the big side. Creases hold sweat and dirt. Make sure to get in there and not miss anything.
If you don’t get into your folds, clean them, and dry them intentionally, odor can develop even if the rest of the body is clean.
8. Not Washing the Inside of the Vagina
Again, I will send you over to read these other posts because this is a lot to talk about here.
