For decades, many of us have trusted store-bought deodorant sprays and antiperspirants without questioning what’s in them.
We’ve been drawn in by the fresh scents, sleek packaging, and promises of “48-hour protection.”
But here’s the truth: most commercial deodorants contain aluminum compounds, synthetic fragrances, and preservatives that may irritate some of our skin, disrupt natural sweating, and in some cases, raise health concerns.
Natural deodorant sprays, on the other hand, are designed to neutralize odor without blocking your body’s natural detox process, which is to sweat.
With homemade deodorant sprays, we use plant-based ingredients, essential oils, and natural powders to keep you fresh while allowing your body to breathe.
The best part? You can make your own for a fraction of the cost of store-bought natural brands, fully customizable to your favorite scents.
To make your natural deodorant spray, you only need a few simple ingredients, most of which are inexpensive and easy to find.
Now, grab your water bottle or glass, pour yourself some fruit water (Yes, we stay hydrated here), take your notebook, and your emotional support lip gloss or balm, whatever works for you, and hit that share button floating right in front of your eyes.

ToggleWhat Causes Body Odor?
Before we get into the recipe, it’s important to understand what causes body odor in the first place because sweat itself isn’t actually the problem. Smelling bad because you are sweating is a big problem none of us wants.
Sweat is odorless when it leaves your sweat glands. The smell comes from bacteria on your skin breaking down sweat proteins and releasing waste products, which is what we smell as “body odor.”
Commercial antiperspirants work by blocking sweat with aluminum salts. While this may reduce wetness, it also traps toxins and prevents your skin from carrying out one of its primary detox functions. Over time, this can cause irritation, clogged pores, and even increased odor when you stop using it.
DIY deodorants, and especially sprays, work differently. They:
- Neutralize odor-causing bacteria using natural antibacterial ingredients (like essential oils and baking soda).
- Absorb excess moisture with plant powders.
- Allow your body to sweat naturally, which is healthier long-term.
Deodorant Spray Over a Deodorant Stick?
You’ve probably seen a lot of DIY deodorant sticks online. Read my other post on how to make the deodorant stick. However, sprays come with unique benefits:
- It’s quick to apply: There is no need to rub it until the balm melts into your skin.
- There’s no residue: It’s perfect for people who hate that sticky or chalky feeling.
- It’s easier to carry: A small spray bottle slips into your handbag or gym bag.
- It doubles as a foot spray: The same antibacterial properties work on smelly shoes as well.
Ingredients for Deodorant Spray Why Each One Matters
Here’s what goes into a powerful homemade deodorant spray and why:
1. Coconut Oil (4 tablespoons)
- Natural antibacterial and antifungal.
- Softens the skin and keeps the underarms hydrated.
- Forms the base of the blend
2. Shea Butter (4 tablespoons)
- Rich in vitamins A & E for skin health.
- Creates a creamy texture when it’s melted with coconut oil (before it’s diluted into the spray).
- Soothes irritation, especially helpful during the “detox” period when switching from commercial deodorant.
3. Arrowroot Powder or Cornstarch (4 tablespoons)
- Absorbs excess moisture without clogging the pores.
- Keeps the underarms dry longer.
4. Baking Soda (2 tablespoons)
- The main odor-neutralizing ingredient.
- Works by altering the pH, making it less friendly for odor-causing bacteria.
5. Essential Oils (15–20 drops)
- Provide fragrance and antibacterial properties.
- Tea Tree Oil: Strong antibacterial.
- Lavender Essential Oil: Gentle, soothing, and floral.
- Lime or Grapefruit Essential Oils: Refreshing citrus notes with added antimicrobial benefits.
6. Leucidal liquid Emulsifier: to blend the oils and liquid together
Step-by-Step Recipe for the DIY Deodorant Spray
What You’ll Need:
- Double boiler or heatproof bowl over a pot.
- Small whisk or spoon.
- Spray bottle (preferably glass or BPA-free plastic).
Instructions On How To Make The Homemade Deodorant Spray:
- In a double boiler, melt the coconut oil and shea butter together until it’s fully liquid.
- Remove it from the heat and stir it in arrowroot powder and baking soda until it’s smooth.
- Add 1 cup of warm distilled water to thin the mixture (this turns the balm base into a sprayable formula).
- Add the emulsifier
- Stir in the essential oils.
- Pour it into a spray bottle and shake it well before each use.
How to Apply The DIY Deodorant Spray for Maximum Effect
- Morning: Spray 2–3 pumps under each arm after showering.
- Midday: Keep a small travel-size bottle in your bag for quick touch-ups.
- Workout: Use immediately after exercise to prevent bacteria from multiplying.
Pro Tip: Spray it and let it air-dry for 30–60 seconds, then get dressed.
Adapting for Sensitive Skin
Some people find baking soda irritating at first. If that’s you:
- Reduce the baking soda by half.
- Add a little aloe vera juice for extra soothing. But make sure to add a preservative.
The Detox Phase: What to Expect
If you’ve been using commercial antiperspirants, your body may take 1–3 weeks to adjust. During this time, you may notice:
- Increased sweating (this is normal as your pores unclog).
- Stronger odor at first (this is the bacteria in your skin balancing out).
Tip: Stay consistent, it’s worth it for the long-term health benefits.
