Now that we’ve got that covered, let’s get into the good stuff.

DIY Natural Deodorant Spray for Freshness That Lasts All Day

For decades, many of us have trusted store-bought deodorants and antiperspirants without questioning what’s in them. We’ve been drawn in by the fresh scents, sleek packaging, and promises of “48-hour protection.” But here’s the truth: most commercial deodorants contain aluminum compounds, synthetic fragrances, and preservatives that may irritate the skin, disrupt natural sweating, and in some cases, raise health concerns.

Natural deodorant sprays, on the other hand, are designed to neutralize odor without blocking your body’s natural detox process, which is to sweat. With natural deodorant sprays, we use plant-based ingredients, essential oils, and natural powders to keep you fresh while allowing your body to breathe.

The best part? You can make your own for a fraction of the cost of store-bought natural brands, fully customizable to your favorite scents.

To make your natural deodorant spray, you only need a few simple ingredients, most of which are inexpensive and easy to find. Below, I will add Amazon links for all the products you will need to make this. If you have any at home, you won’t need to get them, but if you don’t, kindly click the link below to get them and help this mama make some coins at no extra cost to you.

The Science of Sweat and Odor

Before we get into the recipe, it’s important to understand what causes body odor in the first place because sweat itself isn’t actually the problem. Smelling bad because you are sweating is a big problem none of us wants.

Sweat is odorless when it leaves your sweat glands. The smell comes from bacteria on your skin breaking down sweat proteins and releasing waste products, which is what we smell as “body odor.”

Commercial antiperspirants work by blocking sweat with aluminum salts. While this may reduce wetness, it also traps toxins and prevents your skin from carrying out one of its primary detox functions. Over time, this can cause irritation, clogged pores, and even increased odor when you stop using it.

Natural deodorants, and especially sprays, work differently. They:

  • Neutralize odor-causing bacteria using natural antibacterial ingredients (like essential oils or baking soda).
  • Absorb excess moisture with plant powders.
  • Allow your body to sweat naturally, which is healthier long-term.

Spray Over a Stick? Just a preference.

You’ve probably seen a lot of DIY deodorant sticks online. Read my other post on how to make the deodorant stick. However, sprays come with unique benefits:

  • It’s quick to apply: There is no need to rub until the balm melts into your skin.
  • There’s no residue: It’s perfect for people who hate that sticky or chalky feeling.
  • It’s easier to carry: A small spray bottle slips into your handbag or gym bag.
  • It doubles as a foot spray: The same antibacterial properties work on smelly shoes as well.

Ingredient Breakdown: Why Each One Matters

Here’s what goes into a powerful natural deodorant spray and why:

  1. Coconut Oil (4 tablespoons)

    • Naturally antibacterial and antifungal.
    • Softens skin and keeps underarms hydrated.
    • Forms the base of the blend.

  2. Shea Butter (4 tablespoons)

    • Rich in vitamins A & E for skin health.
    • Creates a creamy texture when melted with coconut oil (before it’s diluted into the spray).
    • Soothes irritation, especially helpful during the “detox” period when switching from commercial deodorant.

  3. Arrowroot Powder or Cornstarch (4 tablespoons)

    • Absorbs excess moisture without clogging pores.
    • Keeps the underarms feeling dry longer.

  4. Baking Soda (2 tablespoons)

    • The main odor-neutralizing ingredient.
    • Works by altering pH, making it less friendly for odor-causing bacteria.

  5. Essential Oils (15–20 drops)

    • Provide fragrance and antibacterial properties.
    • Tea Tree Oil – Strong antibacterial.
    • Lavender – Gentle, soothing, and floral.
    • Lime or Grapefruit – Refreshing citrus notes with added antimicrobial benefits.
    1. Leucidal liquid Emulsifier to blend the oils and liquid together

Step-by-Step Recipe for Natural Deodorant Spray

You’ll need:

  • Double boiler or heatproof bowl over a pot.
  • Small whisk or spoon.
  • Spray bottle (preferably glass or BPA-free plastic).

Instructions:

  1. In a double boiler, melt coconut oil and shea butter together until fully liquid.
  2. Remove from heat and stir in arrowroot powder and baking soda until smooth.
  3. Add 1 cup of warm distilled water to thin the mixture (this turns the balm base into a sprayable formula).
  4. Add the emulsifier
  5. Stir in essential oils.
  6. Pour into a spray bottle and shake well before each use.

How to Apply for Maximum Effect

  • Morning Freshness: Spray 2–3 pumps under each arm after showering.
  • Midday Boost: Keep a small travel-size bottle in your bag for quick touch-ups.
  • Post-Workout: Use immediately after exercise to prevent bacteria from multiplying.

Pro Tip: Spray, let it air-dry for 30–60 seconds, then get dressed.

Adapting for Sensitive Skin

Some people find baking soda irritating at first. If that’s you:

  • Reduce the baking soda by half.
  • Add a little aloe vera juice for extra soothing.

The Detox Phase: What to Expect

If you’ve been using commercial antiperspirants, your body may take 1–3 weeks to adjust. During this time, you may notice:

  • Increased sweating (normal as your pores unclog).
  • Stronger odor at first (bacteria balancing out).

Tip: Stay consistent,  it’s worth it for the long-term health benefits.
